Gieve Patel, a well-known playwright, poet, painter, and thinker, died Friday afternoon at the Cipla Palliative Care and Training Centre in Pune, according to the Times of India. Mr. Patel, who was 83, was taken to the Pune center a few weeks ago after being diagnosed with cancer. He is survived by a daughter, according to the report.

Gieve Patel was born in Mumbai and attended Grant Government Medical College. He rose to popularity in the arts and literature because of his work as a writer, poet, and painter.

The Literary Community Sends Condolences

"I knew Gieve for the last fifty years, and our association continued until the final days of his life," noted writer Shanta Gokhale, who translated Patel's masterpiece "Mister Behram" into Marathi, told the daily. He was a multi-talented individual who kept grounded."
"He was a writer, poet, and a great thinker," poet Ganesh Vispute said of a big loss in the Indian literary scene. He was the modern Indian literary movement's torchbearer."

Gieve Patel's death signals the end of an era in Indian arts and literature.
